Resilient Animal Shelter

Livestock has been integral part of Nepalese economy. The rearing of animal is one of major occupation of people and main source of income throughout Nepal. The recent earthquake not only took lives and property of human. It equally killed and displaced thousands of animals. There has been co-ordination, co-operation and action for re-construction of people’s house but less thought is given on condition and re-furnishing of animal shelters. Not only animals related products were jeopardize but also indirect impacts on bio gas plant and organic manure forming was left in limbo.

The earthquake affected livestock rearing to a great extent. Livestock Farmers suffered considerable loss of livestock, mostly due to collapsed housing structures On the one hand large numbers of livestock perished, and on the other animal shelters and marketing channels were destroyed. Unable to look after the animals while residing in temporary shelters, many people had to abandon their livestock, especially cattle, buffalo, goats, pigs and poultry in areas affected. This problem is particularly acute in area where quake hit badly. The government estimated a loss of 53,369 heads of livestock due to the earthquake. In financial terms, this translates into Rs 14 billion but the Government of Nepal has not allotted a penny to compensate this loss.

Loss of livestock due to Earthquake

Name                                  Numbers

Cattle / Buffalo                  16,484

Goat/sheep/pigs                  36,885

Poultry                                    4, 60,805

The Post Disaster Needs Assessments (PDNA) indicated a total loss of $284 million in this sector, of which the livestock sub-sector accounted for $101 million.

Our Project

The project plans to build cost effective smart cowshed without compromising quality of shed. Then followed by awareness campaign about animal care, sanitation and basic use of veterinary service will be used for capacity building of local considering gender equity. The use of integrated bio-gas plant with toilet waste formation of organic manure followed by organic farming will be encourage as sister program.

The Recovery Strategy

Animals continue to live in open space. To ensure a quick recovery, families require support to protect the health and wellbeing of livestock. Without support, these economic losses will be devastating to families who have already in economic shock.

Goal of Project

The main and only goal of the project is to construct the livestock shed, improve animal welfare condition, control livestock diseases and increased productivity of crop-livestock integrated farming.

Project Activities

Resilient Animal Shelter will be launched as a major to livelihoods in Earthquake affected areas of Nepal through livestock and to build up the capacity of the local animal health service providers to work in sustainable manner.

The main objectives of the program are following:

1. Reconstruction/rehabilitation of Livestock infrastructure, such as animal shelters

2. To aware and encourage the farmers about animal welfare.

3. To aware the farmers about balanced feeding for livestock.

4. To aware the farmers about compost manure and organic farming.

5. To aware the farmers about clean and hygienic milk production.

Project Activities

The following activities will be carried out to achieve the objectives of the program.

1. Demonstration and construction of seismic resistance Livestock shed.

2. Veterinary training to promote treatment skills.

3 Coordination meeting with VDC level stakeholders

4. Interaction workshops.

5. Onsite training on clean milk production and compost manure preparation.

Project Location

The piloting of project will be done on small locality of Kavre (Chadani Village) in first phase where its efficiency, endurance and benefits will be evaluated and best practice will be replicated in other possible area. Chandeni, it is rural (or semi-urban) and farming / livestock management is still crucial to the local economy. The area was also very heavily affected by the earthquake.

Project Duration

The formal involvement in this project will just be for the two months, but embedded into the planning and organization is that the program would be able to continue maintaining sustainability and long term impacts.

Checking Emissions

Nepal imports all of its fossil fuel for transportation, Liquid Petroleum gas for cooking and hydrogen fuels for airplanes. The country is also heavily dependent on foreign country for procuring vehicles. There are various stages of emissions generated by vehicles by type of engine they are equipped with, so accordingly they are categorized for rural or urban use. The different countries have different types of emissions standard based on pollution generation and assimilation of same in particular environment. The petrol engine powered vehicles produce less smoke as diesel engine due to some extent of complete combustion.

Hulas Motors is sole automobile manufacturing house of Nepal enjoying monopoly in domestic markets. The hulas jeeps being used for off road transportation on rugged and rural terrain may not have significance of emissions as city counterpart do. But there should be certain standard employed to check emission. Mostly vehicles are imported form India, China and rarely few other countries. There are distinction on emission level on both countries. In India Bharat Stage I, II, III, IV, V are emission level attached with chassis of vehicles when they are manufactured. According to population and pollution level of city various stages vehicle are granted permission to operate. The green sticker on vehicle provide status after emission testing whether particular vehicle can run on city or not. The crowded capital city of India: Delhi has strict regulation for such. The use of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) , electric vehicles are on rise replacing fossil based transportation which is raising grim hope for cleaner & greener city.

There will be day once we will completely switch from fossil fuel to clean energy. But at one time giant step is not possible at any cost. The emission is not so much regulated in Nepal. The century old bus, trucks, cars, vans and others are plying on roads sputtering thick smoke and grunting sound. The mandatory green sticker has been game play for acquiring with corruption and connection. There is authority to regulate, look after implementation but they turn blind eye with excuses and blames. The challenges lies on both end of policy executer as well as users. The regulatory bodies should check, verify old vehicles. The replacement of such vehicles is to be done by clean energy powered vehicles. This will be gradual phase of replacing fossil fuel based vehicle once at a time.

This will take time but it is only viable solution in present context. There will be complete emission check when we replace all fossil fuel based vehicle with clean energy based. The introduction of e-rickshaw, Safa tempo, electric cars like Mahindra Reva, Tera scooters and many ;such are good gesture to indicate change is coming, slowly and progressively. The government should welcome such initiatives with right supportive policy framework. The conscious level of public is also increasing which will make such project more sustainable with visible impacts. This will help for generation of cleaner, greener and eco-friendly Nepal.

Small World : Big Dream

Have you ever felt so lonely and desperate you forgot your own existence. You are over drive of your consciousness. You are blind on broad day light. Your face is sadden, engulfed with past memory and fear of future. Your foots are numb, soul has departed body only remains of physical meat that resembles nothing but void inside void. The person who you cared seems distant apart, only closely tied manacles hold your hands and legs tied so much you cannot escape your past and anxiety of future brings you goosebumps.

Life has not been so hard for you but it is now. Out of sudden your hope which guided you throughout life seems distance far above horizon. There you are in midst of winter bare, desolate, naked in icy cold evening but you do not feel a thing. You are burned inside out. Your hopes could not shape into reality, your dreams just were good enough to be dream, love even you could not get near to it, only gloomy thoughts and fear of loneliness hurts you. You are so afraid of being abused you stop being you. You are afraid people will use you, exploit when they need and trash you to rotten land where none believes and respect you. Look what you have made of yourself where is your dignity, where is your individuality. You are running away from yourself, when you will understand you need to fight for what you believe. Every thing is temporary when you will understand this, once you used to believe in self, you are the person who taught and talked with us about “ Hope”, today you are one who needs it much then entire world. Leave it if entire world is burning today, but don’t let external fire destroy you.

The fire inside you is burning with greater flame then outside. Do not dare to extinguish it, give direction, give wings to your dream. You are one who’s dream makes this world smaller, you are one whose thoughts does time travel. Do not let inner vibes to get eroded. Life ain’t sunshine always, you need to go on other side of world face challenges, learn things, let go of people who drag you. Believe it or not those person who were not with you in hard times do not deserve to be with you in your good times. Be right, do not stay back let whole world know you are determined and motivated enough even odds are against you, you need to pull all your strength and hit it hard. This is called living. To tell story you should be good enough to make a one.

Cheers. Live and Let other do the same.

War of Words : A Fire within

Not everything is supposed to become beautiful and long-lasting. When things go wrong and when people turn against you and walk away without any reason, it has nothing to do with you. It is because they have already served their purpose in your life, they’ll only hinder you in your next level. Not everyone is going to stay forever in your life. So, thank them for what they have given you, let them go and keep moving. Greater things are yet to come.

Now, I know everything in life happens for a reason. I try to help everyone around me and care about them. I help them without any strings attached. I help because I know what it feels like without getting help. I know how it feels like to speak and not be heard. I know the value of everything in life. Everything surely happens for a reason. You might not realize it today, but you’ll surely understand it one day. Just wait for that day and keep moving.

Some take me as granted, some fake to make things but I help them tirelessly. Not expecting rewards or recognition but feeling sense of joy bringing happiness on them. I feel being used but I prefer to take it in other way being useful standing out for them in the crowds. Holding them when world betrayed and left in desolation. I often wonder if there is someone behind me who cares me, wonders what make this person happy. I can just speculate.

Pani Ghatta : A Grinding Machine

Water mill is one of the clean and appropriate technology for grinding at local level. The most of part of Nepal still remains far from electric grid connection. The rural electrification has been catch word just to remain safely in vaults of Planning commissions.. Nepal faces one of the longest hour of blackouts as energy crunch nation we are struggling with basic right to energy access. The geographical terrain, improper settlements of housing system, challenges of hindrances on scenic beauty and landscape as tourism being one of major attraction, losses on transmission lines might be counter acting such kinda of electrification initiative.

The appropriate technology is recognizing need of local people, meeting their aspirations and bringing them one step closer to energy access. There is flow of water from higher hills to lower plains. Here gravity does most of the work. The Kinetic energy of water can be directly used for generating energy. Traditionally we have been harnessing such energy through water mill. Still today lots of people in rural areas are highly dependent on traditional water mill for grinding all required household goods such as flour, rice, wheat, spices and also oil in some cases.

Working Mechanism:

The water from head of 20m or above is brought in open or closed conduit. Traditionally wooden blades are used as turbine on which water jets are strike upon, jets rotates the bigger wheel mounted on smaller wheel. There is continuos feed of grains in between grinds into finer particles.

A story form DhunKharkha, Kavre

The village has perennial source of water, water mill is located near river close to the source of water. The villagers have been using water mill for grinding their grains. It was happy to encounter old mother who was grinding her maize on mill. She was so delighted to use it, as it has reduced efforts and time that people used to devote for grinding in traditional way. She explained although she is weak and fragile, she can help her family in some way. The use of water mill popularly known as pani ghatta is free to use. The opening and closing is as simple with supplying and cutting off water supply to mill. She is happy and proud user of water mill.

This is what appropriate and proper technology can transform rural life. Helps in bridging gap in energy and technology use.

The Dilemma : To Build Or Not To

The Gorkha/Nepal earthquake 2015 remained one of devastating natural calamities country ever faced. Its irony in seismically volatile country like Nepal to remain responsive and readiness for such disasters. Not only earthquake shook our hope and aspiration but fell our homes, institutions and heritages down. The western and central regions of Nepal were most affected regions due to earthquake. The temporary shelters were built for providing shelter for people as seismic activities continues. They have passed scorching sun of summer, chilling winters and again they are exposed to rainy season.

With no proper shelter, sanitation, strong waves of wind how will they be able to cope with limited foods and basic utilities. They are in great dilemma whether to built permanent housing as they fear buildings permanent houses in such seismically active time will result in weak foundation. The fear is still among them, there is no proper presence of government, people believe that government is only looking after so call high class people of villages and squandering budget in high level meet ups in city. While true affected people are suffering, their woes and pain are higher.

The feeling of lawlessness is increasing among local people in affected regions. While government is busy on data collection, assessment of it, finding actual proof of devastation in ground level, further strategy, bringing Re-construction authority in full shape. The other side feel desolated and isolated from mainstream. The helping and distribution of relief works is being heavily politicized creating very biased relief works. While billion dollar pledges from various donors still lies in limbo. The awards of best finance ministership gained by then ministership having being assured is slowly going o vain.

While we are discussing about potential solution, government being guardian of country should make its presence felt. This is time for government to step in to gain trust and credibility that it stands there for public welfare. The past experience suggest a very different track as of embezzlement and corruption that our leaders, bureaucrats and official are popular. The need of hour is honest and accountable head of Re-Construction Authority who can independently work for goodwill of people without any personal vendetta and biasses.

About technicality of building house it is only safe to built house once seismic activities are out of radar. But there has to be arrangement of other facilities so people feel comfortable in existing houses. Like proper sanitation as I see most of house are not equipped with proper toilets. They are improperly build up. Once rainy seasons starts there might be outbreak of water borne diseases as people are residing closely with each other. The supply of pure drinking water should be arranged beforehand. The frequent shocks and tremor has loosened lands bonding, as volatility of landslides and erosion will be higher.

Instead of carrying relief with great fanfare once tragedy hits it. Its better to equip them beforehand. There should be emergency unit for readiness and response in such fragile area. The proper planning, surveying and data study should be done for better results. Thus we can create a resilience, responsive and readiness community.

Community Built by Community : A story from Pharping

A community outskirts of Kathmandu valley with slight uphill and downhill bumpy roads gets connected to capital proudly exhibits its communal innovations and ownership. A model town recently turned into municipality encompasses sense of oneness, co-operation, mutual benefits and desperate need to catch up with development. The traditionally Newari town is slowly accepting all kinds of caste’s along with burgeoning Buddhist among hillside periphery is truly reflected with chants and bustling monks. Slowly and steadily globalization is engulfing life and people want to see changes within their tenure. The local leaders, developmental workers, intellectuals, social workers share their story with us, the locality they envisioned, the hardship they fought for to bring such beauty and changes in town and challenges for further.

TUDE (Tourism Development Endeavor) a parent organization nurturing “ I am power shifter” campaign for Global Power Shift Nepal (a initiative supported by helps to break glass between power shifter and local experts. The venue which witnessed this conversation was none other than “ A school for community” Sheshnarayan – 4, Pharping. We were so glad to hear and share our cause. The struggle, contribution and changes made by Niraj Shrestha (Developmental worker and Principal of School) and Sashi Sharma Aryal (Former Principal, V.D.C Secretary and Local Developmental expert) really inspired us. We were glad that we would also contribute to some extent in community to lead it as model community.

We took tour around community school, community hospital and community centre named Shikharpur Sustainable Farmers School. The community farmer school was real piece of innovation and triggered me so much as it was build out of alcohol bottles left around Dakisnkali temple premises. The bottles were used as bricks mixed with locally available mud (mud + hays mix). The roof was covered by locally available hays. The centre was built by foreigners and local people’s active participation as farmers school. The various skill generating trainings are conducted periodically in house to empower local community and plant seed for socio-economic improvement of locals. The resource centre itself includes creative and innovative ways for solid waste management area, ground water recharge system and organic farming. The farmers school excited our hopes and enthusiasm.

We roamed around city peering through various Newar communities settlement, temples, stupas and playing grounds. Finally leading to holy shrine of Dakinsinkali, what intrigued us was how improperly solid waste were squandered without thinking environmental degradation, lets forget about how much values could be generated. The stinking, sharp smell caught our nose. We had no choice except to cover our mouths, mentally we thought solution for them.

This was reason why power shifter were on town. We had planned to make random sampling about waste management of underprivileged village where it will be harbinger of change and generate values out of waste. As per discussion with rural experts in Chautari of KOPU (a most back ward village on ward no 6 of Daisnkali Municipality) was the location where power would to shift. As early morning downhill with Mr. Sharma took us to Chautari discussion and random list of 25 houses were selected for survey with local participation. The data are under review, soon power shifter team will be moving to Pharping for actual power shift i.e managing and equipping local who will be good enough to handle local waste for environmental, social and economic values.

My Learning:

  • To work as individual and team member motivating, leading and following

  • To interact with experts, team’s and local people

  • To brief, update and channelize team vision

  • To travel (see, believe, learn and share )

  • To make deep imprint on canvass of my memory of place, people food as a whole to change mindset
